College and Career Counseling
Posted on 10/30/2017
Exciting News! Celina students and families have a new resource on campus to help with college and
career planning. We are thrilled to have Emily J. McKinney here with us at Celina High School, please read her message below for more information.

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. As part of an internal innovation grant, Collin College
has employed 15 College and Career Counselors, like myself, to work with Collin County High Schools to
support students in their endeavors beyond graduation. Research has shown that while many students
apply and are accepted to college, large numbers of students do not follow through with their
enrollment, chose an “best fit” major, or graduate. It is an exciting initiative! Our group has been
working diligently most of the summer to be up-to-speed with Collin College programs, admissions and
advising.

I have been fortunate to work with high school students for 30+ years, first as a high school teacher and
more recently as a high school counselor. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences
Education from Colorado State University, and Master’s degrees in Education & School Counseling from
The Ohio State University, and the University of Dayton.

During the school year, I will be here at Celina High School weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, and alternate
Fridays. Over the summer, I will assist with admissions and advising at the Collin Preston Ridge and
Central Park campuses, where I will support students as they transition to college. Please know that
while I am a Collin employee, I am here to assist with career and college searches beyond Collin
programming: career exploration, assessments & pathways, college exploration & readiness, college
applications & exams, and paying for college. Certainly, I am here to help the Collin Dual Credit students
and those who have an interest in Collin and their transfer programs.
